Julian Lennon Performs “Imagine” for Ukraine Relief Effort
Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon, had always vowed never to perform his father’s iconic peace anthem “Imagine.” He felt that his father’s words needed to be heard only in the most critical of times, believing he would only sing it if the world was on the brink of collapse.
However, in 2022, the 59-year-old musician felt compelled to break his promise due to the devastating conflict in Ukraine. Julian performed the song publicly as part of Global Citizen’s Stand Up for Ukraine campaign.
Julian’s rendition was simple yet powerful, echoing the impact of his father’s 1971 original.
In a heartfelt statement, Julian expressed that the “unimaginable tragedy” in Ukraine pushed him to respond in the most meaningful way he could. He wrote, “The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for… As a result of the ongoing murderous violence, millions of innocent families have been forced to leave the comfort of their homes, to seek asylum elsewhere.”
Since the conflict began at the end of February, over 4.5 million people have fled Ukraine, seeking refuge from the violence.
During the Global Citizen fundraiser, where Julian performed, over $10 billion was pledged to support Ukrainian refugees. Donations came from governments, corporations, and individuals worldwide, with half of the funds coming from public European financial institutions through grants and loans.
Julian, son of John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia Lennon, urged people not only to help Ukrainian refugees but to support those seeking better lives everywhere. “I’m calling on world leaders and everyone who believes in the sentiment of IMAGINE, to stand up for refugees everywhere! Please advocate and donate from the heart.”
Julian’s performance and his plea for support were deeply moving. His rendition of “Imagine” and his call to action resonated with many, spreading a message of peace and hope.
